Now this is one story we're happy isn't an April Fools...

Firefox 3 is now the most popular browser version in Europe according to web analytics firm StatCounter. The open source browser attained a 35.05 per cent share of the European market with IE7 narrowly behind at 34.54 per cent.

Before we all get too excited StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen admitted: "The move is partly explained by a small switch from Internet Explorer 7 usage to Internet Explorer 8 but also by growing market share overall by Firefox 3. The data shows that Firefox is closing the gap and is now just 10 per cent behind all Internet Explorer versions in Europe."

StatCounter revealed that globally the Mozilla software isn't as popular with a 24 per cent market share and IE7 coming in with a hefty 41 per cent.

Perhaps most interesting in all this however is that Internet Explorer 8 has met with a relatively lukewarm response since release in mid March. Despite an early surge, take up of the browser quickly trickled off and it currently remains behind the likes of Opera and even Firefox 2.0. Furthermore, with Firefox 3.5 shaping up nicely, Chrome extension coming in May and Safari Beta 4 revamped to become the new speed king it looks like things aren't about to get any easier for Microsoft...

@Steve32 the story title says "Firefox Top Browser In Europe" not "whole of the Internet."

I am NOT questioning the accuracy of Statcounter. Statcounter may be neutral, but they are NOT monitoring the whole of Europe. Surely you can work the rest out.
