It's one of those 'about time' moments...

Some industrious snooping by neowin.net has dug up some rather interesting data in the files for the latest Office 14 beta. Located inside the Migwiz.xml are these code extensions:


Of course while still unofficial it would be hugely silly of Microsoft not to finally bring native 64-bit functionality to the Microsoft Office product line. Windows 7 after all is being touted as the first Microsoft OS which will see significant 64-bit take up - both from upgraders and direct sale by retailers.

The obvious upside to 64-bit computing in this scenario is the ability to make use of vastly more RAM as well as better data encryption which from 64-bit registers would be a major plus to high level organisations and MI5-types who enjoy leaving laptops on trains and in cabs.

All this is chicken and the egg stuff though as more 64-bit software encourages more 64-bit OS take-up and more 64-bit OS take up spurs on developers to make more native 64-bit programmes. The good news: rightly or wrongly, they don't come much bigger or more influential then Microsoft Office...

Expect Microsoft to official this up soon, even if the productivity suite itself won't be available until 2010.

I do find it odd we have had the 64bit MS OS for a while now and yet no 64bit office until 2010!
