Such a method is hugely popular through the likes of TweetDeck, twhirl and TwitterFox and now it seems Facebook has cottoned onto the idea as well...
In opening its Status API last month, the world's most popular social networking site has enabled programmers to build third party status apps in a similar manner to those enjoyed by Twitter users. Perhaps unsurprisingly then it is the creator of twhirl which has come first to the floor with 'Seesmic for Facebook'.
Like twhirl and TweetDeck, the simple app uses the Adobe Air platform to give users a quick way to update their statuses and view those of others. A small pop-up can also be set to alert you to status changes.
Cautious users however should be aware Seesmic warns: "It should be considered BETA (in the good-old sense of the word) - we make no warranties that the product will work for everyone nor are we able to provide support to the wider community at this time." That said, compulsive social networking types may want to dive right in as Seesmic has admitted it plans to soon enable its Twitter and Facebook clients to display both feeds in either piece of software which should result in even more time wasting time savings.
In related news Facebook Connect has also launched for the iPhone meaning developers can log into Facebook from their apps and share their thoughts, tips and experiences. Implementation is claimed to take "just a few lines of Objective-C code" so expect this to become a bit hit.

I just downloaded Twhirl and Seesmic, and they're both nice so far. Although, I wish there was a way to put both feeds in the same window. That would be cool!
