Stop the presses, folks. Windows 7 is, finally, available to download. Problems over the last few days, with Microsoft's servers completely failing to survive the rush of would-be beta testers, have now apparently been resolved and the initial 2.5m download cap removed by way of compensation.

Unless you already jumped on the early Windows 7 leak or you're in possession of a developer build, then now is your chance to get hands-on with the successor to the (to put it nicely) controversial Vista OS. Superficially there may not be much immediately discernible difference, but under Windows 7's surface a lot of work has been undertaken to make this the best Windows yet.

From my short time with the Beta build over the weekend, that seems to be the case. Admittedly I'm running a pretty fast system (3.0GHz Intel Core 2 Quad, 4GB DDR3) but my partitioned Windows 7 install definitely felt faster than Vista, which I usually use. Were it not for the 1st of August expiry date I'd consider switching over, program compatibility pending.

If you're feeling daring, the download link is just below.

@Alex - I also loved the startup screen when I first booted Windows 7, but I'm not sure if it will start annoying me once I've seen it a few hundred times.
