iWork isn't exactly the world's most thrilling application set so it's hardly surprising that the updates in its latest incarnation run in a similar vein. Keynote is treated to a bunch of new transitions for text, images and objects. The ability to focus on one particular item in a slide is, in fairness, pretty neat as is an app enabling control from an iPhone or iPod touch. This shows a single slide in portrait mode, two in landscape and navigation is performed with a swipe of the finger - how else?

Numbers gets some new charts, more powerful formulae and, incidentally, a 20 per cent increase in its ability to make me fall asleep as I write about it. Pages is treated, if that is the right word, to more templates and a full screen mode, which removes the program's interface putting focus purely on the document being edited. All thrilling stuff, I'm sure you will agree.

Of much more interest is iWork.com (currently still forwarding back to Apple.com), which is about to enter its beta stage. Apple's take on online document sharing, Google Docs and Microsoft Office Live style, iWork.com is unsurprisingly integrated into the iWork 09 in the form of a simple button on the menu bar.

Clicking on the iWork button within a document asks for an email address, to which a link will be sent, with said file editable in an online interface almost identical to the program it was created in, for example Pages.

Additionally there are listings of exactly documentsare currently being shared, who they're shared with, and any unread notes on those documents. While in beta iWork.com will be a free service, but once launched in full Apple will be levying a charge for its use. Google might not be usurped quite yet, then.

That's it on the software front for MacWorld up next..? You'll have to wait and see.
