Microsoft Extends XP Cut Off For Developers AGAIN

It just won't die, will it...
In what is now the eighth story we've run about yet another Windows XP sales extension it seems Microsoft is indeed making good on the October promise it was alleged to have discussed with system builders and distributors to not cut all sales on 31 January 2009.

In an email to CRN (hello my old chums) and its online site ChannelWeb, Ballmer's boys confirmed that it will now allow final order deliveries to be extended until 30 May. In short it still means that disties and system builders will need to order up all their stock by 31 January but they can spread delivery and - vitally - payment over the ensuing four months. This should come as a major boon during this nasty creditamous crunchitatous and for the man on the street will mean we'll be able to pick up Windows XP laptops comfortably until Windows 7 launches the middle of the year.
It is also the clearest indication to date that Microsoft has come to terms with the fact that millions of customers are simply going to skip Vista and sit it out for the rather more promising Windows 7. Of course some of this is harsh because Vista has improved immeasurably since its initial release, but you just can't shove out something that broken on day one - especially years late.
That said, the ridiculous Mojave Experiment and millions spent in bizarre marketing campaigns (Gates/Seinfeld ads, anyone? At all?!) clearly didn't change enough people's initial perceptions so it's good to see the company subtly moving on...
