Apple Confirms Early Snow Leopard Launch

It's likely to be the most incremental of the OS X updates so far, but 10.6 - dubbed 'Snow Leopard' - is still eagerly anticipated and now we know when you'll be able to get it...
Speaking at LISA '08 (Large Installation System Administration Conference) last week, Apple's Director of Engineering of Unix Technologies (ADEUT?) Jordan Hubbard was the man to spill the means explaining that users will get it during the fairly wide release timeframe of 'Q1 2009'. He then stuck up this large slide to emphasise the point:

Perhaps the most interesting aspect however is for once a company is actually looking to ship an OS ahead of schedule (Microsoft please take notes). After all, when formally unveiled at June's WWDC Apple had hinted Snow Leopard would take a full year from then to make its way into stores. Of course it also solidifies the notion that the OS is more of an optimisation and fine tuning exercise (multi-core CPU and GPU processing at the core aspects) than the revolutionary turns seen in Tiger 10.4 and (less so) Leopard 10.5.
So is Mac OS X sneaking ever further ahead of much maligned Vista or will the so-far promising Windows 7 drag it all back? We'll know this time next year...
