Good old Firefox...

Despite the onslaught from the remarkably impressive Google Chrome beta browser, the open source people's favourite Firefox continues to make great strides this year with web statistics site Net Applications claiming its market share has now surpassed 20 per cent for the very first time.

"It's Official - Firefox Surpasses 20% Worldwide Market Share!," declared the Mozilla blog, patting itself and its users on the back. "Congratulations to the Mozilla community for reaching this historic milestone! For the first time in either a weekly or monthly period, Firefox surpassed 20% worldwide market share."

Those official figures are 20.00 per cent and 20.06 per cent in the weeks beginning 5th and 26th October respectively. This share dipped a fractional amount to around 19.9 per cent between those times before bouncing back. In fact, Net Applications' latest figure (for the day of 31 October) shows Firefox has hit 20.19 per cent which suggests the upward momentum is continuing.

Of course this is all the more remarkable given Google's high profile entry into the market (I had always assumed it would just buy Mozilla...), the continued push of the likes of Opera, the sneakily-iTunes-bundled Safari and Internet Explorer's considerable advantage of being bundled on every Windows PC on the planet.

Impressive? Very much so, but just imagine if your aunties and uncles, grandparents and (possibly) parents even knew what Firefox was...

Quick, go spread the word (hint: "Anything but IE").

Chrome is good and fast but it still isn't complete overall, for example I can organize my bookmarks the way I would like

I mean I can't organize my bookmarks in Chrome at the moment and it doesn't have RSS support

My parents wouldn't have found out about Firefox for themselves, but I installed it for them and they wouldn't go back to IE now that I helped them get used to it. People... more
