While it is widely accepted that Opera Mobile is the best alternative to the iPhone's magnificent (even if Flash absent) mobile Safari we could do with a few more choices out there and with the latest incarnation of Internet Explorer mobile looking rubbish, thank heavens Mozilla finally looks ready to roll with its portable edition of Firefox...

Speaking to Linux Insider, Mozilla CEO John Lilly echoed the words we have waited to hear since October 2007: "We want to make sure that the Web on mobile is more like the Web than what the mobile industry offers today, which is closed, separate networks and not a very good information-getting experience for the user. The first thing is to bring Firefox to mobile devices. We're working on that, and we'll see some alphas in a few weeks."

Can't wait.

Perhaps predictably, Lilly also played down talk of the potential rivalry with Google - whose search provides Mozilla with most of its income - now it had launched Chrome: "We don't know yet. I would say we have very good relationship with Google. Google has done a lot to make the Web better and to make information more accessible. Some of the components of Firefox are shared with some of the components of Chrome. I'm not sure "competing" is the right word. It's not the way I think about it. We're trying to make something that provides a good experience for people, and they are too."

I'm not so convinced about this one, Chrome's potential as essentially a v1.0 product (or even less as an inevitable Google beta) is phenomenal and I wouldn't be surprised to see both products begin to replicate each others' key differentiators as the battle heats up. In fact, I'd be disappointed if they didn't.

Either way, it's an exciting time in the browser wars and I simply can't wait to see the next step... and yes, that centres around Firefox Mobile on Android.
