Adobe Unleashes Creative Suite 4

It's time for people who know far more about photography and graphic design than me to get very excited indeed...

Adobe has today dished the dirt on its new Create Suite 4 (CS4) product family in what it is describing as its "biggest software release to date". Six suites or full version upgrades of 13 standalone applications - including Photoshop CS4, Photoshop CS4 Extended, InDesign CS4, Illustrator CS4, Flash CS4 Professional, Dreamweaver CS4, After Effects CS4 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 have been unveiled.


Without getting into the nitty gritty (we'll leave that to Cliff as my brain may explode) the common theme for the series is workflow, or in other words: making it easier to complete common tasks and switch between applications without leaving what you are working on. Specific highlights also include the integration of Adobe Flash Player 10, further 3D modelling development, the "ability to apply tweens to objects instead of keyframes (Cliff, help!), and a searchable library of more than 450 dynamically updated device profiles from leading manufacturers.

Collaboration is also being emphasised with Acrobat service Adobe Connect Now accessible from InDesign CS4, Illustrator CS4, Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop Extended CS4, Flash CS4 Professional, Dreamweaver CS4, Fireworks CS4, and Acrobat 9 Pro enabling real time collaboration with two colleagues or clients (methinks of fond memories sharing MS Paint on a LAN network - ahh, the chaos!).

Shipping for the CS4 lines begin in October through authorised resellers and the Adobe online store. Prices are (it's cross your fingers time) £1,249 for Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium, £1,195 for Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium, £1,409 for Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium and £1,969 for Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection. Tiered upgrade offers will also be made available for owners of previous editions.

As for Adobe Flash Player 10, it is currently available in beta as a free download from Adobe Labs at the link below with general availability expected by the end of the year.
