Microsoft 'Midori' Platform Revealed

On the one hand Microsoft is keen to tell everyone Vista is not complete rubbish (more of here) and on the other it has secretly admitted the OS's model leaves something to be desired.

Let's deal with the positive news now though: Microsoft is radically changing the way it builds operating systems. The info comes from SD Times which has gotten its mitts on internal Microsoft documents which show the monolith is working on "a componentized non-Windows" platform known as 'Midori'.

An Internet-centric design, Midori is an offshoot of the company's Singularity project and aims to create a more efficient and reliable operating system that writes the kernel, device drivers and applications in managed code using a virtual machine.

Yep, we're talking about a system which will give Microsoft more control over the hardware involved and means the headache of seeking compatibility with millions of potential component configurations should be greatly eased. Less dub it the 'Apple Approach'. Crassness aside, naturally enough there is no development time frame for Midori as yet but it does suggest a rainbow is forming just beyond the horizon.

It'll stop here as going any deeper will cause my brain to explode from Geek.

Happy wishing it was 2015...
