Firefox has done what we all expected and in some style too...

An official Guinness world record has now been confirmed with the official figure of Firefox 3 downloads a monstrous 8,002,530 during a 24 hour period following its release. The total number of Firefox 3 downloads to date is now in excess of 28 million.

"The enthusiasm and creativity of Firefox fans was instrumental in achieving this record," said Paul Kim, VP of Marketing at Mozilla. "Our community members came together and not only spread the word, but also took the initiative to help mobilize millions of people to demonstrate their belief that Firefox gives people the best possible online experience."

"As the arbiter and recorder of the world's amazing facts, Guinness World Records is pleased to add Mozilla's achievement to our archives," said Gareth Deaves, Records Manager for Guinness World Records. "Mobilizing over 8 million internet users within 24 hours is an extremely impressive accomplishment and we would like to congratulate the Mozilla community for their hard work and dedication."

Without pooh-pooing things too much it is worth stating there was no official previous 24 hour download record for Firefox to beat, but this is at least a figure likely to withstand most onslaughts. It is also unknown whether the record is immune to 'forced' downloads such as when Microsoft adds Service Packs to Automatic Update.

Still, for those feeling rather proud at contributing to a world record then Mozilla is issuing certificates which you can claim here and for the open source community it represents a significant victory...

Best web browser out there in my opinion.

Glad more and more people are aware that IE isn't the only option.
