Not this again...?!

Microsoft is to appeal its latest EU antitrust fine - $1.4bn (£680.9m) in February - for defying sanctions imposed on it for anticompetitive behaviour. Microsoft has not declared its reasoning behind the move though it did admit it was looking to "seek clarity" from the move. Muddying this somewhat however is its stance that it is appealing the fine and not the judgement. Pick the legal bones out of that one...

At the time Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said "Microsoft was the first company in 50 years of EU competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision." Prior to the fine Microsoft had launched Microsoft Interoperability (above) a platform dedicated to opening up its high volume products to third party developers, but it seemed too little way too late.

Adding further confusion into this picture is Microsoft's decision last October to concede its nine year EU antitrust fight. Clearly the seven month break has left it feeling refreshed and up for another scrap.

It's a good gig being a Microsoft lawyer...
