There was something of a desperate hope to push Windows Vista for a few more days hitch in the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 last time around, but now it's all systems go.

Following the nigh endless saga of delays, rumours and purported performance increases, not to mention a stay of execution and Dell and Lenovo's controversial decision to to keep flogging XP after it disappears from shelves SP3 is here somehow delayed from its locked down release date and aborted original release last week.

So for one last time: you'll get an umbrella of cumulative patches (many of which have been released for XP already) including security updates, bug fixes, an updated Windows Product Activation and some new functionality including Network Access Protection (NAP). Depending on how up to date you keep your system SP3 will vary in size from 67MB to over 300MB.

Whether it can deliver on its hype is unclear but given the largely apathetic reaction to Vista (being forced to upgrade to a new PC isn't success, Microsoft) it won't have to do much. So head on over and crank this baby out. No horror stories have yet emerged a la Vista SP1 so suck it up, be brave and hit that install button...
