Even the boldest Apple fanboy would probably admit the company's ploy of pushing its Safari web browser to unsuspecting iTunes users as 'an update' was a rather nefarious one - but it certainly seems to be working...

According to data gathered by Net Applications, the much hyped Safari v3.1 has tripled its penetration into the Windows market in just two months since being thrust upon us. Admittedly, this only means the browser has grown from a pitiful 0.07 per cent to a still teeny 0.21 per cent share, but proportionally it's very good going - or is it?

You see on the flip side the italics in the opening paragraph are there for a reason. Firstly, how many technologically clueless individuals installed Safari without realising what is was or what they were doing? Secondly, how many of them then bothered to use it? Thirdly, of those who did use it how many will still be using it as their default browser 12 months down the line? Quite frankly, despite the wonders of Mobile Safari on the iPhone its bigger brother is not the best desktop browser out there. In my opinion it doesn't even take a podium place.

In the cold light of day then it will be interesting to see whether this surge can be maintained because backdoor installations don't guarantee long term conversion. Furthermore, Apple has now shown its hand meaning users will be more cautious next time Apple Update tells them "New Software is available"...

Note: As of 18 April, Apple is now showing Safari as 'new' software not an 'upgrade' if a previous version of the browser is not already installed.
