When your most loyal partner has to design their own front end to make your OS more useable then you should probably take the hint and thankfully Microsoft has.

Windows 6.1 has been officially launched by Microsoft this week - a long delay considering it was first shown off in early December - and tweaks, rather than a radical overhaul, are the order of the day.

Main changes in 6.1 are the realisation of its Deepfish project to create a full-screen viewing and zooming web browser with Adobe Flash and Silverlight support, threaded SMS (thanks Apple), a redesigned homescreen with more finger friendly icons (thanks again Apple), boosted security and support for Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

"People want a single phone that's flexible enough to meet their needs throughout their day, whether it's connecting to work or your everyday life," said Robbie Bach (above), president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "The innovations we've added to our Windows Mobile software ultimately make it easier to manage your world."

This being Microsoft, a raft of networks and handset manufacturers have dived aboard the upgrade with partners including: Alltel Wireless, AT&T, ASUS, HP, HTC, Intermec, Motorola, Orange, O2, Palm, Pantech Group, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Spring, T-Mobile USA Inc., T-Mobile International, T-Mobile Germany, TELUS, Toshiba, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone.

For those disappointed by 6.1, Windows 7 will present the real quantum leap forward] sometime in 2009, but you'll have to sit tight until then... or buy an iPhone... or a BlackBerry... or a Nokia smartphone... or... you get the hint idea.
