The best things in life are free, unless you're a fan of PhotoShop.

That is until creator Adobe today launched the first public beta of 'PhotoShop Express' today - a Rich Internet Application (RIA) that works like a stripped down online version of its bigger (and hugely expensive) brother.

All the basic commands are in there such as crop, resize, red-eye removal and removing blemishes along with more advanced options such as colour enhancement, distortion and sketch effects. Express also takes advantage of its online roots by syncing with any Facebook, MySpace or Picasa albums you may have (Flickr support comes in early April) so you'll have no excuse for not looking your best at all times *cough*.

"Photoshop is trusted technology that has changed the visual landscape of our world. Now, Photoshop Express allows anyone who snaps a digital photo to easily achieve the high-impact results for which Adobe is known," said Doug Mack, VP of Consumer and Hosted Solutions at Adobe. "Photoshop Express is a convenient, single destination where you can store, edit and share photos whether you're at home, school or on the road."

Users get a generous 2GB of storage on the beta while the Flash 9 core of Express means it'll work on virtually any browser worth its salt on any platform you care to mention. A more advanced addition for enthusiasts is also on the way and will carry an as yet unspecified monthly fee.
