Not feeling the love for Apple or Microsoft...?

If that the case then Linux has long been the route of choice for many with Ubuntu the most popular mainstream variant. So prepare to crack a smile as the first beta of v8.04, dubbed 'Hardy Heron', has just been publicly released.

Following on from Gutsy Gibbon (it's alphabetical progression - duh!), Hardy Heron sees a number of major updates including the latest version of Xorg (7.3), a Linux 2.6.24-12.13 kernel based on 2.6.24.3 bringing support for amd64 power savings, Gnome 2.22, PolicyKit, the default of PulseAudio and Firefox 3 Beta 4, GTK's version of the Transmission bittorent client, Vinagre, Brasero and a nifty World Clock Applet (Vista-esque if I dare say) all installed as standard.

Users will also see native PDF support, an upgraded software firewall, better Memory protection and the integration of the Wubi installer which allows Windows users to install and uninstall Ubuntu like any other Windows application - a key feature in attracting new users.

As ever, Ubuntu warns that this is a beta so bugs will be present but if you lend a hand then chances of the company hitting its final 24 April release look good. Come on, with Wubi onboard what have you got to lose...?
