It is perhaps the most requested update of all time and now it's almost here...

Amazon has continued its flappy-mouthed approach (it surely must be agreed behind the scenes?) and blabbed the release date for retail copies of Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

As you can see from the grab, "This item will be released on March 19, 2008". Amazon is certainly trying to build momentum around the launch too with a deal to slash the RRP by 27 per cent to $94.99 and offer free delivery.

Naturally enough, confusing the issue is a second Amazon ad claiming the launch is on March 18 - so I suspect this means afflicted owners will be getting Windows Update alerts from 18th with the first date taking shipping into account.

Our First Impressions review of SP1 back in December will tell you not to expect the world from this upgrade but it should add some much needed spit and polish to a product that was unprofessionally rough on initial release.

Keep an eye on your update notifications Vista owners, you've earned it...

Update: Confusing the matter still further are new screens on Amazon UK which say Windows Vista Ultimate and Home Premium editions will ship on 4 April (grab below). Personally I suspect the UK is simply getting its usual shoddy deal and is being made to wait as it seems unlikely Amazon would not know the situation in its heartland with just one day to go...

Update 2 18.03.2008: Amazon was spot on. It's out now and available for download.
