Not once, but twice have rumours emerged that Vista's successor would arrive ahead of schedule in late 2009, only for Microsoft to deny them. Sick of the chatter, it has decided to speak up.

Shooting the breeze with softpedia, Microsoft confirmed to them in writing that "We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and development is scoped to three years from Windows Vista Consumer GA [read: early 2010]". Throwing in the usual Redmond caveats however the spokesperson did go on to say that "The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release." This seems a new tactic, given the recent example set by Vista...

To be fair to Microsoft for a minute (just one minute, though), it has always suggested that 2010 would be the most realistic time frame for the already much needed OS (I said it would be just one minute). Sadly, despite this confirmation, Microsoft refuses to say whether 7 has reached 'Milestone 2' - the second major stage of the software - which was originally scheduled for March.

So we'll take that as a big, fat NO then...
