Apple isn't the only company looking to open up its wares...

This week sees everyone's favourite watching-idiots-hurt-themselves-website YouTube get in on the act with 'YouTube APIs and Tools' which open up functionality for web pages, software and devices.

In the words of YouTube: "Users of the API can upload new videos, edit video metadata such as comments and favorites and modify user settings. Your client application can request a list of videos that match specific search criteria, get access to the most popular YouTube videos or retrieve and maintain YouTube user information such as playlists, subscriptions or contacts."

It also listed these main bullet points:

  • Create a web front end to let people view videos about specific topics.
  • Create a desktop application or plugin that plays videos in a customized environment.
  • Add related, dynamic video content to your website or application.
  • Customise the Flash player to fit the look and feel of your site, device or application
  • Add feeds of videos from each of YouTube's 18 international domains

A range of case studies (involving Tivo, Animoto, EA and the 'Add It To Maps' programme grabbed above) have been made available as well.

Of course the logic in such a move is obvious and with an unceremonious collapse guaranteed for virtually every technology company that doesn't continuously innovate it looks like we'll be seeing this as the first of many 'upgrades' to YouTube over the next 12 months.

Expect one of those to be HD video (720p at least). Bet ya...
