Don't pi$$ off the Pentagon...

Late last week Google found itself on the end of an ear bashing from the US Defence Department after the impetuous search engine giant was found to have filmed detailed ground level footage of its military bases and uploaded them onto Google Earth and Google Maps!

The practice was detected when images of Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas appeared on the service and the company was told in no uncertain terms to get shot of them. Google has also subsequently been banned from filming and detailing military bases and buildings in future (it had the nerve to even create a 3D panorama of Fort Sam).

It is not the first time Google's mapping process has come under fire. South Korea, India and Morocco have all either complained or began censure of the services while in October last year the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' claimed to use Google Earth to plot rocket attacks on Israel. A Chinese Jin-class nuclear submarine was also seen using Google Earth last July while Heathrow expansion protestors also capitalised on detailed images to plan a House of Commons rooftop demonstration in February.

Of course data is Google's forte - whether it be geographical or information - but as we have seen before it hasn't always wielded it responsibly.
