That little logo is getting pretty accurate...

This week Mozilla has announced that Firefox has surpassed an incredible 500 million downloads. The news is pretty significant too because coming just five months after it totalled 400m downloads it means the growth rate continues to spiral.

Interestingly, Mozilla chose not to divulge the browser's current market share along with the news - the two would seemingly go hand-in-hand - but with a hefty 17.4 per cent last time around there is heavy pressure to keep moving forwards.

Of course these figures do have to be taken with a pinch of salt given that any one user will have downloaded Firefox numerous times to keep up with upgraded versions, but since its main rival comes pre-installed on virtually every PC that ships across the world today we'll cut it some slack.

As for that rice thing: to celebrate this landmark Mozilla is looking to raise 500m grains of rice on www.freerice.com, a non-profit website which strives to end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. It calculates 500m grains will be enough to feed 25,000 people for one day.

Just like its download figures, since this also stems from a non-profit organisation, neither should be taken lightly...
