Facebook has a wonderful knack of delighting and infuriating users almost every day. For every friend located or humorous status update, pages are long-winded and 'invitations' irritating. So it is having a rethink.

In a move which somewhat mimics its iPhone version, the site will introduce tabs into profiles to split information and make it more digestible.

"The big project at Facebook these days is a redesign of Profiles," says official Facebook blogger Carolyn Abram. "As more and more information is available on Facebook—more photo albums, more applications, and more history—we've realized that profiles have become cluttered and harder to navigate as a result. We're trying to make profiles more simple and relevant, while still giving you control over your profile and how you express yourself."

The cynical side of me says: yes and it also gives you far more page impressions, which given recent suggestions that traffic is falling (at least in the UK) is not an inconsiderable factor. That said, I did remark at the time of the iPhone Facebook launch that "I actually found the iPhone site to be far easier to navigate than the original", so I guess we can't have it both ways...

Expect them to start filtering through over the next few months.
