EU Fines Microsoft Again. $1.4bn This Time

TrustedReviews NewslettersIt seems Microsoft has a knack for picking up more fines than your average Chelsea tractor.
Emerging today is news that the software giant has been fined $1.4bn (£680.9m) for defying sanctions imposed on it for anti-competitive behaviour.
Speaking out on the issue Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said "Microsoft was the first company in 50 years of EU competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision."
Now all this is somewhat surprising given Microsoft conceded its anti-trust battle in October with Kroes herself stating at the time: "I welcome that Microsoft has finally undertaken concrete steps to ensure full compliance with the 2004 decision."
On top of this last week the Redmond based firm launched Microsoft Interoperability, a platform dedicated to opening up all its high volume products - from Vista to Office. Indeed the company responded to this latest fine with something of a sideways glance, pleading: "As we demonstrated last week with our new interoperability principles and specific actions to increase the openness of our products, we are focusing on steps that will improve things for the future."
Clearly not enough for the EU's liking...
