Remember when Mozilla spun off Thunderbird and then announced it would create a dedicated 'Internet, Mail & Communications' arm? Well here it is...

Five months on we have 'Mozilla Messaging', the new mail-focused subsidiary of Mozilla which will immediately focus development on the much anticipated phoenix from the ashes - also known as Thunderbird 3.

In keeping with Mozilla's sensibilities, Thunderbird will remain a free, open source programme and will bring a number of enhancements including integrated calendaring, better search, easier configuration and overall tweaks to both performance and user interface.

"We're excited to renew the focus of our open source community on the future of Thunderbird," said David Ascher, CEO Mozilla Messaging (above). "Each and every one of us is committed to building a great email product that people will love to use and that serves as the foundation for choice in a critical area of Internet software."

Mozilla has posted an FAQ if you're curious to know all the ins and outs, while you can also head on over to David Ascher's blog. Fingers' crossed for developments soon...
