GRISOFT (more of later) has unveiled the second beta edition of AVG 8.0 for Windows now for public testing. Yep, that means you can get your sticky (heck, I don't know what you've been doing) hands on this major new release now and for nothing.

Amongst the highlights are a new interface, multi-threaded scanning engine which combines anti-virus and anti-spyware protection, safe searching and surfing protection (AVG scans all site links on the fly), IM security and detection of malware infected files. All this is neatly packed while retaining AVG's famed small footprint and low resource scanning.

It's now later, so back to GRISOFT which has this week changed its name to the rather more sensible 'AVG Technologies'. Given that the AVG brand has long overtaken GRISOFT in terms of public brand awareness it seems like an ultra logical decision to us. For the record the Czech Republic-based company is also now AVG Technologies CZ, the US-based company is AVG Technologies USA, the Cyprus-based company is AVG Technologies CY, Ltd and the UK-based company, already operating under the AVG name, will now be known as AVG Technologies UK Ltd.
