It's probably breaking some unspoken fanboy rule to discuss Microsoft on the first day of MacWorld - but that's just how I roll…

On the upside for those pitching the flag for the feline obsessed formerly white fetishist, the news that Microsoft is facing yet another European antitrust enquiry and has released another Vista Service Pack is likely to cause some chuckles.

Looking at the legalities first, it turns out that once again Microsoft is in hot water this time for bundling Internet Explorer with Windows (as opposite to Windows Media Player last time) and the questions surrounding interoperability of Microsoft software with rival products. Yep, we're here again.

The latter of these accusations is rather odd too considering Microsoft conceded its nine year antitrust fight with the EU back in October, with total fines now fast approaching €1bn. Furthermore, Microsoft agreed to provide third party developers with full access to all the information required to make their products interoperable with their software offerings and reduced royalty payments and licence fees.

So the last battle took nine years, what about this one? Perhaps that's why Bill decided he had had enough

In related news, Microsoft has also released 'Vista Service Pack 1 RC Refresh' through Windows Update. The company has offered little detail about what this version offers over the original SP1 RC released in December but its more public availability suggests some tweaks must have gone on.

Note: you'll have to uninstall SP1 RC before 'Refresh' will play nice and it is time limited software which will no longer operate after 30 June so think long and hard before hopping aboard.

Still, if there ever was an operating system where improvements were needed at any cost it's Vista…

Onto MacWorld...
