Windows Live is Microsoft's way of proving it is still hip, cool and down wit da kidz and it can now toss away those beta plates...

Today sees the whole service arrive at the v1.0 milestone and offer a complete package of useful tools including Mail (the successor to Outlook Express), Messenger (the version we all use instead of the one bundled on XP), Photo Gallery (M$ Picassa), Writer (blog content uploader), Toolbar (a, err... toolbar for Live services) and its OneCare semi-successful anti-virus offering.

On top of this Microsoft offers to 'enhance' your productivity by adding Live Search into the IE address bar (a la Google in Firefox), setting your homepage to MSN.com (oh yes, really helpful) and collecting anonymous system data (insert rant here privacy fanatics).

Of them all you'll find Messenger and Mail (if it ever gets round to adding a UK dictionary) the most useful, while the journey out of beta-dom should see both existing products and, hopefully, developing ones (read: Deepfish and its lack of announcements since March!) gather momentum.

Microsoft still has a massive way to go if it is going to catch up with Google on this side (and I doubt whether it ever will) but it is off running...
