In July Mozilla cut loose Thunderbird to concentrate on Firefox and now we know what it plans to do with it...

Today sees the brassy coder announce 'a new initiative to stimulate innovation in Internet mail and communications' which translates to a spin-off brand headed up by ActiveState CTO David Ascher to focus on future Thunderbird developments.

"Innovating in mail and communications advances our vision of choice across the spectrum of Internet software," said Mitchell Baker, Chairwoman of the Mozilla Foundation. "David has been a respected member of the Mozilla community for many years and we're excited that he is joining Mozilla to lead this important effort."

As the quotation suggests, all is a bit vague at this stage though it does suggest Mozilla opted for option two in its proposals made in July: "Create a new non-profit organization analogous to the Mozilla Foundation".

An initial $3m seed funding will be put into the as yet unnamed company and Mozilla emphases that the move means nothing will change for current Thunderbird users with regular security and stability updates kept going until something wonderfully wiz-bang emerges for this venture.

Fingers' crossed. Anyone else bored of Outlook?!
