Following yesterday’s USB charging batteries it appears logic is enjoying a powerful 48 hours after this announcement from Lexar.

The ‘JumpDrive Mercury’ is a memory key with a very sensible difference: it shows you how much capacity is available without having to plug it in. A simple gauge displays the available storage space as a percentage, and this isn’t even the clever part…

What boggles the mind is how Lexar has gone about adding this. The Mercury gauge uses ‘Electronic Paper Display’ (EPD) technology created by E Ink Corp to create a reading that is not only shatter proof but also doesn’t rely on any external power. As far as I know, this is the first gauge based memory key to work in such a way.

Show stealer aside, the Mercury also has some nifty security software in the shape of ‘JumpDrive Secure II’. This lets users create multiple password protected areas dubbed ‘encrypted vaults’ and files are just dragged into these secure areas to encrypt them. In addition, a file shredder feature can delete files from the drive in a manner which means they can never be recovered.

File transfer speeds are zippy too at 10MBps (or 66x) and you’ll be able to buy them in 1GB or 2GB capacities for just £34.99 and £59.99 respectively.

I didn’t think it was possible to want yet another memory key, but there you go…
