Snapchat kills off Snap Channel original content platform

It’s tough to turn out original content, as Snapchat has now discovered.

Snapchat has announced the closure of Snap Channel, after less than a year of it being live.

Snap Channel, which produced self-generated content for Snapchat, launched back in January.

It was removed from the Discover platform a few weeks ago, although a re-launch was expected.

The Snap Channel team were supposed to be creating a 2.0 version of the service, but the plan was scrapped due to financial issues.

As a result of the shuttering, Marcus Wiley, Head of Program Planning and Development, will be leaving the company.

He was hired back in May, after having previously worked as Senior Vice President of Comedy for Fox.

Give that we are winding down the Snap Channel, it’s natural that Marcus would want to explore other opportunities,” Snapchat explained in a statement.

It added: “He is a tremendous talent, and we wish him well.”

An unspecified number of the 15-strong Snap Channel team will also be made redundant, although some may be reassigned in the company.

Snapchat will now be forced to rely on its Discover partners for original content.

The platform features media from a range of brands, including the Daily Mail, ESPN, Comedy Central, Vice, Cosmopolitan, CNN, Yahoo, and National Geographic.
