Google buys abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com

Google’s recent announcement of a new parent company called Alphabet was unexpected but it’s clearly committed to the odd moniker.

To that end, the search engine giant has purchased abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com.

The official website for Alphabet – ABC.xyz – was launched by Google back in August.

As such, it’s not clear what Google is going to use the new domain for.

According to a Telegraph article, abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com was originally created back in 1999.

But why is Google buying up such strange URLs? Well it’s probably partly because BMW is unlikely to sell alphabet.com.

It’s probably even more unlikely that news network ABC will flog ABC.com.

Perhaps, then, Google will just be keeping its new domain as a placeholder, barring competitors from snapping it up.

Related: What is Alphabet?

Google first announced its Alphabet rebranding back on August 10.

The company revealed it would be splitting its various divisions into separate operations under the over-arching Alphabet umbrella.

The largest division is, unsurprisingly, Google, but other elements include Google X, Nest Labs, Google Ventures, and Google Fiber.
