Great review Stuart. As a non guitar player I wasn't sure whether this was indeed a game or more instructional but it seems to be a great fit to get off the ground.
Is the guitar that comes bundled with the game any good?

This is a fantastic game for beginners. Highly recommended.

The guitar included in the bundle is not bad but I'm not the biggest Les Paul fan. I would say that the best course of action would be to go to a music store and see what they have in your price range or even if they rent them out so you can find out if you like playing guitar before making the purchase.

My recommendations in the Price range of that Epiphone Les Paul Junior are: Ibanez Gio or Ibanez GRX22. Still have my GIO and it's Fantastic.

You neglected to mention that it is also available for Mac, which I am using. Latency issues are much improved over original version for Windows.

Thanks. I'm afraid I haven't tried the guitar bundle - I've been playing with an old Epiphone Riviera and a Hohner telecaster copy I bought in the very early nineties, and the most important thing is that the guitar is setup properly and the tuning and intonation are solid (which is where the rather neglected Hohner tele falls down). Personally, I'd do as David suggests and buy (or rent) a budget guitar that suits you. I suspect playing Rocksmith is easier on a guitar with a Gibson scale and plenty of sustain, and without a whammy bar you'll have fewer tuning issues, but I've tended to gravitate towards strats and teles over the years, and I'm still not 100% comfy with the Riviera.
