The laser printer came within a whisker of its 16ppm reported print speed managing 15ppm in my tests and, as with most laser printers, the text results were simply outstanding. And while no mono laser picture print outs will make it to an art gallery, the SCX-4216F spat out surprisingly good results that displayed minimal pixilation and banding. A pat on the back to Samsung must also be given for the “tone save” button which - while lighting up in a rather fetching green - cuts back on ink use by a reported 40 per cent and still produces results that would turn any inkjet owner green. In fact, for anything other than the most important of documents this button is never likely to be turned off.

Scanned pages were also something of a surprise. The results proved fast and clear and though I have no desire to create a scan in excess of 500MB all the options are there if you feel so inclined. I had no trouble producing scans from either mat or shiny surfaces. That said, I can’t help but be left wondering if it would have been even better had the SCX-4216F supported USB2.0.

As for the fax, well a fax is a fax, or so I thought. But the three seconds per page fax speed of the SCX-4216F left me rather gob smacked after three test pages disappeared in less than 10 seconds. I was in fact tempted to put each page through again until I received an affirmative phone call from the recipient about thirty seconds later. The SCX-4216F also features a rather handy “Toll Save” button which is positioned just under the also rather handy “Toner Save” button and glows a similar green colour. What Toll Save does is stop a fax if there isn’t a fax machine to receive the transmission on the other end of the line which will save you a fair number of wasted pages if you, like me, often mistakenly dial the phone number from a business card. All fax operations can also be operated whether your PC is switched on or not.

Finally, there is the photocopier. There are no major surprises here, it does its job quickly and efficiently with minimal smudging. It’s the same quality as an expensive modern stand alone machine it is infinitely better than those hulking monstrosities we used to torture ourselves with in university libraries.

It is worth mentioning that with all this paper passing through the machine there is a large rear flap that can be pulled down to remove any paper jams, but throughout my review time with the SCX-4216F I suffered none.

Verdict:

While the SCX-4216F is obviously aimed at the small business user, its bargain price and high quality functionality would make it ideal in any modern home. I was thoroughly impressed with Samsung’s latest multifunction device and it follows hot on the heels of the ML1750 in receiving a TrustedReviews Recommended award.
