Printers, they just aren't exciting. Unless they save up to 40 per cent of your print costs...

This is the bold claim made by Samsung this week with the launch of the 'MultiXpress 8385ND' multi-function printer. Targeted at small to medium businesses the colour laser unit will throw out a rocket propelled 38 pages per minute, copy, scan and fax - but what of those running costs...?

Samsung bases its figures on a CIP Webcast report (the thrill ride: 'Getting a Grip on the Office Printing Free for All' from January 2009) which states companies with over 1,000 employees spend £245 per head every year on visible hardcopy prints (hardware and supplies). Samsung says this will drop to approximately £150 per head thanks to the efficiency of its high yield toner cartridges which last for up to 20,000 pages apiece.

Happily, aside from the cost cutting there isn't any... err, cost cutting. The 8385ND incorporates a customisable 7in colour touchscreen control panel, stonking print resolution of up to 9,600 x 600 dpi, puts out a first page in just 14 seconds and can hold over 2,700 sheets at a time. Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 are the connectivity options while the 800MHz CPU, 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD wouldn't look out of place in a netbook.

The MultiXpress 8385ND launches this month and Samsung advises you contact local dealers for pricing. If only my flat were big enough...

...nah, I'd buy a pool table.
