Canon Updates Its Photo Printer Range

If there's one thing that the proliferation of digital cameras has meant (other than we're all taking more photos of course) it is that people more and more want the convenience of being able to access their memories without the hassle of professional development. Indeed, if you follow the advice of our in-house guru, you'll be creating professional prints at home in no time.

Of course if your printer isn't up to scratch then no amount of Photoshop skills will save you, which is no-doubt why Canon, makers of many of our recommended cameras would also produce its own range of photo-oriented printers. With this in mind then the new iP3500 and iP4500 are being launched with the intention of taking the frustration out of home photo printing.

Starting with the iP3500, then, specs include a maximum 2pl (pico litre), 4,800 x 1,200 dpi print resolution and the ability to print a standard "photo lab quality" 15 x 10cm picture in 47 seconds. The iP4500 increases this to a 1pl, 9,600 x 2,400 resolution and 21 second print time or, roughly speaking, an entire 36-shot "film" in under 15 mins - take that 1-hour processing. The fairly ubiquitous PictBridge support is onboard for PC-free printing, alongside Canon's proprietary ChromaLife100 system which claims to give photos a 100-year lifespan when printed on Canon paper. Claims of the sort we're currently putting to the test.

Further differentiating the iP4500 from its smaller sibling is the inclusion of a built-in CD tray, for easy label printing - the difficulty of which I can attest to. Available from September the iP3500 and iP4500 will set you back £59 and £79 respectively.
