great group test! contained everything I was looking to find out about power supplies.

Good to see my current PSU, the Silent Pro M 700W, got a Recommended Award. Also, confirmed my suspicion that it's not nearly as quiet as it's name suggests. Other then that can't fault it, but wish I had the space to install the Dark Power Pro, which is a bit deeper then the Cooler Master.

great job! comprehensive and lots of psu's to boot (pun intended). Can we have something similar for harddrives, or cpus etc etc?

comment Ed said on 24th April 2009

Thanks guys! My late nights feel justified now. :)

@Lamboy: We've certainly considered doing roundups for other products in the past but it's never quite happened (bar Stuart's recent headphone roundups). We'll have another chat between ourselves and see if that might be a positive direction for us to take.

Great feature, as Lamboy said can we have more like this please.

I know you mentioned it Ed, and I appreciate your time constraints, but I just thought I'd say that the Corsair HX620 (which is a rebranded Seasonic unit IIRC) could perhaps have been included. I think it's probably one of, if not *the* most popular modular PSU in the 500W-700W region going by my past experiences, indeed it's what is powering this very post ;)

However, Be Quiet's PSUs have been getting a lot of praise recently as well (so much so I want one myself!), so I don't doubt that their unit would have still come out on top.

Other than that, a great article! (Although it could use a conclusion/summary page at the end).

Yes, I felt the only thing missing was a conclusion/summary too. I remember being told to watch this space when the last Power Supply round-up was done last September. Well, it was worth the wait for this group test :)

Thanks - good article

shame no Enermax PSU's..? especially the Modu82+

Would have really liked to have seen at least one corsair psu in all of that but apart from that great review and very informative

comment Zaim said on 25th April 2009

good review, though i was expecting to see some Corsair PSU's

comment basicasic said on 25th April 2009

Thanks for the review. Excellent.

I'm pretty sure Corsair PSUs are made by Seasonic so they will be decent. I've got plenty of Enermax, Seasonic and Antec PSUs (some approaching 7yrs service) out there and never had a failure.

Even high end systems consume far less power than you would think and a decent 500-700 watt PSU should be ample and money well spent. I've got a Seasonic 430w which has taken plenty of hammer over the 4 yrs I've had it and still as silent as the day I bought it.

Thanks for the round-up, they always help to keep abreast. I would have really liked to see warranties mentioned for these, though. I wouldn't consider buying one with less than 5 years. Any chance of adding those, Ed?

comment Ed said on 5th May 2009

Hi b166er,

Good point about the warranties, though this is something that most manufacturers clearly list on their websites. I'll consider adding them next time.

I wouldn't say 5 years is a prerequisite by any means. At least 2 is fine and 3 is good.

I was using a Cooler Master eXtreme 430W, and it frigging surprised me.
I managed to use it to run a Q6600 and a GTS250 without a hitch.
Though I've since then upgraded to a OCZ StealthXStream 600W, which was well value for money.
