To accompany its latest mouse, SteelSeries also provided us with one of its latest mouse mats, the Steel Series SP.
It's of the hardtop variety so mice glide over its surface with consummate ease. The down side being the hard rough plastic against the bottom of the mouse makes quite a racquet as you move about. However, this is largely made up for by the superb tracking the surface provides. Even with a cheap, otherwise unimpressive optical mouse, the mat improved tracking no end when compared to using a typical laminate desktop.

The bottom is completely covered in a thin layer of foam rubber that provides an incredible level of grip so you should always have a secure surface to game on. It also has the added side affect of slightly cushioning the mat as well.
The mat is very large and will dominate any desk it's sat on but if you're gaming you will no doubt appreciate every extra centimetre it provides. Certainly, I found myself using the full extent of it after it had settled in.
Verdict
The Steel Series SP Pro Gaming mouse mat will improve your optical or laser mouse's performance, reducing cursor jumping and improving accuracy, when compared to a bare desktop or those cheap novelty mats so often used. If you've already bought a decent mousemat then you probably needn't upgrade but for anyone else it, or one of it's cousins, would be a sound investment.
