As mentioned, the Ikari doesn't require a driver and setup is true plug-and-play. However, to setup FreeMove and create gaming Profiles and Macros, you need to install the included software. It's compatible with most recent versions of Windows (98/2000/XP/Vista) but not so Mac OSX and Linux, even though the mouse will still work on these operating systems.
The software's easy to navigate and very intuitive to use so you'll be setup in no time at all. Within it, you can quickly assign high and low CPI levels, set the FreeMove level, and arrange the Ikari's five buttons to perform whatever task you want. And, once done, all the settings can be saved to the mouse, ready to be taken anywhere with you.
The body of the Ikari is finished in black and grey soft-touch plastic that is smooth yet not slippery and fundamentally is a pleasure to hold and easy to grip. It feels solid and well built although its lightweight design does put you in mind of a cheaper product. Left hander's will be disappointed to know there's no left-handed version available and, given the mouse's shape, the right handed version isn't going to suffice. However, for those of us in the majority, the design is very nice indeed and it should suit both fingertip and palm users alike.

The layout of the buttons has to be among the best I've ever seen with each button being not just where you expect but exactly where you want it, so you never have to glance at your mouse to locate anything. I particularly like the back and forward buttons that fall just under the ball and tip of your thumb and the CPI switch that is out the way behind the scroll wheel but still within easy reach of your middle and index fingers when needed.
All the buttons have a very lightweight action that requires the minimum of pressure to activate them but they still exhibit a pronounced click so you know for sure when they've been pressed. In the heat of battle this is essential for ensuring your reactions are acted upon as quickly as possible and you don't have the frustration of lining up a shot, only to have your timing ruined by a failed button press. Of course, if you are a more heavy-handed user, you may find the ease with which you can inadvertently press a button is actually an issue but, you can't please everybody.
By this point, you're probably aware I really like this mouse. Indeed, I'd hope you realised that as soon as you saw the score. However, if you need it spelling out for you, this is the best gaming mouse I've ever used!

Now, obviously there's a degree of personal preference involved when it comes to reviewing such a tactile product, but I'd always recommend you get yourself to a shop and try a mouse in your hand before you purchase it anyway. However, when it comes to sheer performance, I defy anyone to name a more accomplished mouse. Yes it costs a little more than your average mouse but at £50 it's hardly going to break the bank.
Verdict
Choosing between mice is a very personal thing and I'd always recommend handling a new mouse to make sure it's comfortable before you buy it. However, in terms of performance and value, the Steel Series Ikari Laser mouse simply can't be faulted and it deservedly gets our top award.
