Despite the increasing encroachment of technology into our daily lives, there are some things that will just not go away. Notwithstanding the best efforts of the brainiest boffins, it’s sometimes the simplest most obvious approach that is most effective.

Pen and humble paper for instance, in spite of a myriad of handy technological alternatives, remains the most versatile (and cheapest) way of putting our thoughts down, taking notes, writing reminders, lists, exchanging phone numbers, filling forms in … and keeping ourselves occupied during boring meeting.

But the good old Bic and Post-it do have their drawbacks: you can’t undo that rude doodle of your boss in the corner of your A4 pad, inspirational notes written down on scraps of paper and phone numbers for supermodels have a nasty habit of going missing, and unless you’re very organised, finding stuff you wrote down any longer than a couple of weeks ago can prove to be a bit of a challenge.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take the best that pen and paper has to offer and marry it with the convenience of digital?

It’s something that technology companies have increasingly been looking to do of late. We’ve already seen widespread use of touch screen and stylus technology on PDAs, tablet PCs and designers’ graphics pads, but the latest generation of ‘digital ink’ products from ACECAD and Logitech aim to take the technology one step further. They attempt to make paper and pen ‘digital’, allowing you to scribble away while they record what you write down.

So is it finally time to put that spiral pad a ball-point out to pasture? Read on and find out for yourself.
