The next unit from Hiper is slightly more upmarket, at least in terms of rated wattage, which has the HPU-3S425 capable of delivering 425W. The HPU-3S425 also has an additional fan at the bottom, which should help pull hot air away from the CPU area inside the case, although it adds an extra noise factor.

There’s also a sliding switch next to the power socket, which enables you to change the speed of the fans. There are four different settings to choose from - Auto, Low, Medium and High. The Auto setting should be fine during most circumstances and the Low setting could actually cause the PSU to overheat if the load was too high.

There are no less than eight Molex connectors. However, these have been badly distributed as there are only two cables coming off the power supply, each with four Molex connectors and a floppy connector daisy-chained along each cable. This is pretty much a no-no in terms of PSU design as if you use all of the plugs the loss in power along each cable will be significant and can cause attached components to malfunction. There are also two SATA power connectors on a separate cable as well as a 20-pin ATX connector a 12V and an AUX connector.

In terms of performance the HPU-3S425 passed all the tests, and although it produced some very low voltages on the 12V rail at 75 and 100 per cent load it was within spec. The only real issue is that the wires used on the 12V cable are too thin for use with 12V wiring and at full load these got hot to the touch, which should not happen. So while it passed all the tests and at £35.12 is a low cost option, the Jeantech is cheaper still and outperforms it.
