Dyson Upgrades Handhelds With Fastest Motor Ever Built

We've a soft spot for Dyson on TrustedReviews. Anyone who can make vacuum cleaners interesting deserves a great deal of kudos and the British company has done it again with the launch of a new mini handheld that reinvents the electric motor...

The 'DC30', 'DC31' and 'DC31 animal' are successors to the popular DC16 line and feature the fastest motor ever built. The switched reluctance motor spins at an incredible 104,000 revolutions per minute which to put in some context is 10x faster than that found in a Boeing 747 and 5x faster than the motor inside a Formula 1 racing car.
"It's radical," said Sir James Dyson. "It's completely different technology. We are the only company in the world producing a switched reluctance motor. What's odd is that we have used it in such a prosaic product."
Which is why we tend to like Dyson in the first place...

As for the new portable vacuum cleaners themselves they weigh just over 1Kg and use this wizz bang new motor to create more powerful, constant suction and offer longer battery life. Consequently you'll now get up to 10 minutes usage on a single charge life or six minutes when ramped up to full power. More than enough time given anything longer surely requires a full size machine in any case.
The trio maintain the same gun-esque shape of the DC16 but offer a more slimmed down design with a wide range of swappable heads (the animal comes with a specialist brush bar for collecting pet hair), holster charging and a catch to pop open the bottom and drop waste directly into a bin.
As ever with Dyson products they don't come cheap with the DC30, DC31 and DC31 animal retailing for £109.00, £129.99 and £149.99 respectively. Pre-orders are available now with shipping from 6 July. Bragging rights start now.
