I know, I know, I know… guitars. But you haven't seen this one…

For those with long memories, the Gibson ‘Dark Fire' is the follow-up to the remarkable Robot Guitar which debuted exactly one year ago and like it's predecessor the Wow factor is off the charts.

Like the original Robot Guitar, Dark Fire is a self tuning Les Paul which uses sensor technology in the head to take all the angst out of getting it in key. Improvements this time around see the Dark Fire tune to pitch in less than one second, while the machinery behind it has been drastically reduced and the battery life significantly extended to handle up to 500 tunings on a single charge.

Furthermore a ‘Chameleon Tone' system means the Dark Fire combines with a P90, bridge mounted humbucker and third piezo pickup on the bridge to create a virtually limitless range of tones. A breakout box also ships for easy digital workflow while headphone out, FireWire, two 1/4 inch balanced line outs are also standard along with music software so you can get all kinds of high tech on your shredding.

Unfortunately, as good as this sounds, Gibson isn't divulging a price at this stage though I'd suspect - 12 months on - the $899 price premium seen on the original Robot should have declined somewhat while stocks are likely be more plentiful when it launches on 15 December. Gibson says existing Robot owners will get an upgrade deal too, so if you shelled out first time around there's less no need to feel bitter and twisted.

Oh and if you didn't understand a word of all this axe-talk. Tough!
