Down at Stuff Live Sony Entertainment and Universal Pictures have announced a joint-venture, called PoP, which may be the strangest thing I've heard all year. The scheme will see the placement of vending machines which, instead of dolling out refreshing drinks and delicious snacks, will offer up deliciously refreshing digital media.

Among the machines' offerings will be PS3 games, Blu-ray films, DVDs CDs and PMP-compatible download. The latter presumably laced with DRM, but that's an acceptable compromise for getting a fix of, say, Bond while waiting for a Tube. At launch some 150 titles are promised to be purchasable, but that number should grow.

Content can be paid for my card-based or physical monies and content will be churned out either in a pristine shrink-wrapped package, or onto a memory card, flash drive or, in fact, just about any USB-compatible device.

Annoying (to me at least), though, there's no indication if PoP is an acronym or just a pun. I'll forgive that, however, as PoP is coming to Britain only at the moment which for a Sony venture is pretty impressive!
