Eee Stick Gets Official

The more I see and hear about Asus' Eee Stick the more I'm coming to the conclusion that I want one, and I can't really tell why. Having now been made official, and thus having had their modus operandi exposed somewhat, I'm still no closer to an answer. At least we know exactly what the Stick is now.

In fact, the Eee Stick's name is a bit of a misnomer, because really it is, in fact, a pair of 'sticks' coupled to a wireless receiver. That aside, there's not much else to misinterpret. In essence the Eee Stick probably most analogous to a split-in-half gamepad (wasn't Sony planning something of the sort?) merged with the motion sensing capability of Nintendo's Wii-mote. The idea being that in tailored games (several of which will be bundled with the controller) you'll be able to translate hand movements into in-game actions - I'm sure by now we can all visualise how that works.
Because the Stick's 'normal' buttons and analogue stick controls register as a standard Human Interface Device (HID), though, the Stick should also be useable with just about any game. However, the Eee Stick will only be available as a bundled part of special Eee PC and Eee Box packs.
Of course if you really wanted the controller(s) you could always eBay the netbook/sub-desktop after purchasing the bundle.
No idea on a UK release timeframe or prospective pricing just yet . Asus' reps are suggesting a September-ish release, but that's not a definite. Expect a UK-specific announcement in the next few weeks.

I don't understand how they can get away with such blatant mimicry. Surely Nintendo has a patent for their nunchuck design? I'm not saying this is a bad thing, the Japane... more
