Art Lebedev's Optimus Maximus keyboard, while very cool, does have a few problems. The next product set to be launched in the Optimus range, named the Pultius, looks set to lose the biggest restriction of its predecessor, namely it's prohibitively expensive retail price - albeit at the expense of a few keys.

And by a few we're actually talking about most of them, leaving a five by three grid of fifteen OLED display-sporting buttons connected by a pass-through USB 2.0 port (i.e. there's one on the back so you don't lose a connector buy plugging in the keypad). Not that these are any ordinary keys.

The buttons used are exactly the same as those used by the Maximus, boasting a 48 x 48 pixel resolution with up to 15fps animation. As you would expect from an Optimus, the keys are fully customisable so you're getting more than just a glorified stand-alone num-pad. Granted the prototype Tactus rather eclipses anything so crude as to use physical inputs, but we're a way off from seeing that available to buy yet.

Pricing isn't available, although hopefully it won't be anywhere near the £600-odd the Maximus is asking. Art Lebedev says availability is scheduled for late this or early next year.
