There's hacks a plenty for the iPhone this week (MMS is very cool), but could February '07 see a legitimate development to best them all?

According to web chitter chatter this week TomTom is the jaw dropping name planning to release an official GPS module add-on for the iPhone once third party developer support is officially enabled in February.

Those blogging compulsives at Engadget grabbed this potentially massive hoax scoop and the always grainy accompanying shot (above) does indeed show an iPhone reformatted TomTom interface. The obvious sceptical question to ask is: why would the route be actively following the 'A13/E19 to Rotterdam' when its sat on a wooden table? Optimists happily retort: it could easily be explained by either an early demo mode or simple route retracing command.

Either way, whether it is TomTom or someone else it wouldn't be the greatest surprise to see a GPS module make it onto the iPhone early next year. Furthermore, with Apple past masters of the "And finally..." it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that such a big hitter has been landed for day one.

Start dreaming/praying/nail biting...
