Apple and Sky have something in common: they stay at the top of their fields not because of features or pricing but because of their wonderfully simple and intuitive user interfaces and smart lines of third party products. The latter will soon be on its way down however if it keeps making stupid decisions like this...

After just two years, Sky has announced it will be canning/dumping/divorcing/booting out of the garden its wonderful Sky Gnome. In a statement it simply said:

"Sky will be removing Sky Gnome from sale to focus on these developments and future launches which will continue to offer more flexibility in accessing Sky." All existing Sky Gnomes will continue to work as normal, but sales have been stopped with immediate effect".

Now I would suggest Sky better have something rather fantastic up its sleeve because as a proud Gnome owner (which is lovingly referred to as 'Fred' in my home) I have to admit it is one of my favourite parts of the Sky service. It is the perfect combination of DAB radio and channel extender letting me continue Sky coverage outdoors or even match coverage in the bathroom! Sky reference its Sky Anytime PC service, but it isn't nearly as flexible with live coverage and I don't want to drag my laptop everywhere with me thank you very much.

Nope, with an initial £70 RRP (which subsequently fell to around £50), the Gnome - with its eight hour battery life, backlit LCD, channel changing and presets, line out and surprisingly powerful stereo speakers - offers a far more flexible system with vastly more content than anything Sky has come up with since.

Now if you'll please excuse me I have to go and console Fred...
