Though we’ve had many incarnations of it by now I think it’s fair to say a definitive technology for wire free headphones has yet to be discovered. Fair to say, that is, until semiconductor company Kleer made this astonishing announcement…

With the establishment of ‘Kleer Audio’ it claims to have created a revolutionary RF wireless module which is capable not only of streaming lossless quality audio but – remarkably – providing up to 10x the battery life compared to an equivalent Bluetooth pair.

Now, this being the world of technology, there has to be a downside and that’s audio range which – at around six feet – is roughly three to four times less than Bluetooth. Given that the target is portable devices however does this really matter?

Another notable fact is that Kleer itself is just the chip manufacturer so it won’t actually sell this product directly though the likes of Thomsen, RCA and Brainic have already demonstrated the technology and early reports are extremely positive.

So when can we get this technology and will we have to sell both Auntie Ethel, Uncle Edward and some of our most vital internal organs to get it? Here’s the best part: RCA has announced it’s new 1GB Jet Stream mp3 player (above) which will come bundled with Kleer’s wireless headphones for a total RRP of just $149. At this price expect numerous companies to follow its lead with the earphones available in both bundles and separately.

Wires… pah! They’re sooo 2006.

Update: Kleer has been in contact to say the six feet audio range is a result of testing in the signal-crowded halls of CES. Real world usage should be closer to Bluetooth's 30 feet. Result!
